¬ 2004 competition report

Dumfries and Galloway Council, Leisure and Sport service hosted the 3rd annual indoor rowing championships at the Ryan Centre in Stranraer on Saturday 24 April 2004.

The centre proved to be an ideal venue for the final event of the indoor rowing season as spectators could view the action live or on the big screen. It was a fantastic day out for all the family, attracting lots of new faces and healthy competition.

Local competitors relished the opportunity to race over a range of distances against rowers from Scotland, Northern Ireland, England and the USA. Amongst those who stood out were twin sisters Shanon and Yolanda Crichton and father and son teams Mike and Martin McWhirter and David and Jordan Hislop.

There were over 110 entries and the atmosphere was electric. Medals eluded many of the rowers but personal bests were achieved including the nine strong Dollan Indoor Rowing Team who walked away with eight personal best times and a gold medal.

Other great achievements on the day were adaptive rower Tracy Burns who took bronze in her event and Nicky Burns who completed the Open Mens 2000m category.
