Prize Winning Bridies
STRANRAER bakers John Gillespie and Sons Ltd have struck gold with their bridies in the World Scotch Pie championships.
Their award will join the silver which they collected for their bridies in the first-ever championships held in 1999.
Sausage meat, onions and a secret seasoning tickled the palate of the judges and on Wednesday, Iain Gillespie and wife Evelyn were in Blackford to collect their award. Iain told the Free Press this week:
" I am quite chuffed I must admit. We have not been involved for some years because of pressure of work but with a new baker I have been able to find some time to spend on the competition".
He collected his six samples for judging from a standard batch of bridies that have been enjoyed by generations of Stranraer folk and they went for judging at Dunfermline.
He and Evelyn knew they had won an award of some kind from the letter inviting them to a lunch and the prize presentation. But it was only when they attended the ceremony that they learned they had taken gold.
