Casino Concerns

CONCERN continues to grow that a casino in Stranraer is a "done deal" despite what has been described as growing anxiety in the surrounding community.

A decision by a federation of community councils in the area over whether to support the development bid has been put on hold. But one member said after their latest meeting:

"I think it’s a done deal. They have made the decision in Dumfries that they want this."

Council representatives asked for more time to consult with members before throwing their weight behind the project or lodging their opposition.

Opinions differed during the meeting with one member giving his support but others clearly against the idea. Kirkmaiden secretary Isabel Killoch admitted:

"The anxiety increases when you hear that you would not need a membership to enter the casino, which makes it even more accessible to people."

Chairman of the same council John Enos said:

"It would be fair to say there is some anxiety."

The comments came after a presentation by economic regeneration officer Piotr Lewicki on the Stranraer and Lochryan Waterfront Casino proposal.
