No Change to Rail Link
NETWORK RAIL's proposals to axe Stranraer's direct rail link to anywhere other than Kilmarnock have been given the thumbs down.
Dumfries and Galloway councillors consider the plans are more for the company's convenience rather than to provide a better service for their customers.
And a national rail consumer watchdog, after asking thousands of rail passengers for their priorities in Scotland, report that for the vast majority in the south-west it is a case of "no change".
A report which went before the regional council's Planning and Environment Services last week laid out Network Rail's proposals and the council's response to them.
Only after repeated attempts by the Free Press to have the position clarified did Network Rail admit some weeks ago that their proposed review of the Stranraer service after Stena moves to Cairnryan, still scheduled for next year, would mean an end to through services to Glasgow and the withdrawal of the Stranraer to Newcastle morning service - and the journey in reverse.
