Christmas Events Start with a Flash and a Bang!
COUNCIL workmen and Forestry Commission staff went on a 48 hour blitz to make sure Stranraer's Christmas festivities went ahead on time.
There were fears that Saturday's festive season lights switch-on would be hit when the 30 feet high Christmas tree, which had only been in place for days, was toppled and snapped in Thursday night's gale-force winds.
But emergency measures swung into action, another tree was chosen and by Friday it was in position on the Castle Green ready to be decorated by staff from Dumfries and Galloway Council's Land and Street Services - part of the Combined Services Group based at the Culhorn depot in Stranraer.
A council spokesman said the cost of the exercise had still to be worked out but she added:
"It is good they were able to get the tree up in time".
So the Christmas events started on Saturday with a flash and a bang.
