On the Spot Fines

DOG wardens in Stranraer issued 72 on-the-spot fines in 2006 to  irresponsible dog walkers who failed to poop-a-scoop.

Since January, when they first started patrolling, they have issued  71 fixed penalty notices up 42 since the same period last year.

And 24 people were warned of that in the future they faced  prosecution and fines.

An environmental health spokesman said:

"The wardens started in April  and the first few months were spent actively educating people.

"They have also been building up awareness of the penalties they face  if they don’t clean up after their dogs."

Councillors welcomed the figures at December's Wigtown West Area  Committee. Said Councillor Fred Murray:

"We've got 42 fixed penalty notices and  that’s very pleasing.

"I would like the message to go out that the warden is doing his job.

"If people taking their dogs out for walks leave mess in a grassed  area, or anywhere else, they must realise that now the likelihood of  getting a fixed penalty is quite high."
