First "Smart" Flat Opened

A UNIQUE flat in Stranraer, was officially opened this week by Dumfries and Galloway Council Convener Tommy Sloan.

Dubbed the "Smart House" at Millburn Court, the flat will raise the profile and demonstrate the use of technology that helps people live independently.

And it will enable elderly people to stay at home for a longer time.

The technology, sometimes called Telecare, is electronic equipment that is installed in a house to help keep the occupant safe and independent. It is linked to a response centre where staff are on hand 24 hours a day to answer calls and summon help if it is needed.

The "smart"’ technology includes items such as door alarms, heat and cold detectors, medication reminders, fall alerts, flood and smoke detectors, passive infra red sensors and alarm buttons to call for help. The equipment can be operated automatically if the person is unable to do this for themselves.

Opening the flat, Mr Sloan, explained:

"This is a really exciting venture between the Council, NHS Dumfries and Galloway and Loreburn Housing and demonstrates true partnership working."
