Clashmahew DIY Store Plans Under Threat
Stranraer could lose out on 40 jobs if a DIY store and garden centre
do not get planning permission.
Developers looking to develop land at Clashmahew on the southern
outskirts of the town say the project would also increase retail
turnover by £2.5 million a year.
But Shire councillors were today (13/06/07) being recommended to
turn the plans down.
For planning officials fear that the development would hit town
centre businesses which are already having to fight hard to survive.
CWP claim the development, which they say is the first of its kind in
Stranraer, would bring 40 jobs. The site, they add, is ideal for this
sort of development, situated as it is near a number of existing
bulky retailers, including Jewson and Builder Center.
The DIY store and Garden Centre would include a total gross floor
area of 25,000 sq ft and include car parking for 157 cars, situated
between the DIY store and A77 Stoneykirk Road.
Landscaping would be carried out between the car park and the main
road and a mini roundabout at the junction of Stoneykirk Road and
Ochtrelure Way would be introduced to reduce speeding and improve
safety in the area.
If approved the development could be built and opened by March of
next year.
