Waterfront Progress Request
GALLOWAY MP Russell Brown is pressing for progress on the next phase of the regeneration of Stranraer Waterfront.
This involves the building of a breakwater to enable the formation of a marina.
Work has been delayed because former Seacat owners, Sea Containers
Ltd have not terminated their lease with Crown Estates over areas within the harbour previously occupied by them at the West Pier.
And The project cannot go ahead until the lease has been terminated or Sea Containers have given Dumfries and Galloway Council written permission to occupy the lease area.
The delay has already added an estimated £130,000 to the £1.3 million cost of the breakwater and Mr Brown fears that the costs will continue to spiral unless the situation is resolved.
He has written to Sea Containers to urge them to accelerate the termination of the lease.
Mr Brown said:
"The regeneration of the Waterfront is a vital plank in the strategy for building the economy of Stranraer and the surrounding areas, and we must push ahead with the breakwater project to ensure we keep the momentum going. "
