Day Centre Crisis

Stranraer's cash-strapped Coronation Day Centre is in crisis after its staff discovered they were legally entitled to double their annual leave.

It has emerged that workers at the pensioners' day centre discovered last year that since 1998 they were entitled to four weeks annual leave — twice as much as they were getting.

Now the centre is legally obliged to give compensation and meet the holiday entitlement while struggling with its budget after the NHS axed its annual £15000 grant. It is understood that the yearly NHS grant was 20 percent of its budget.

And in the last year, four of the management committee have resigned, leaving only the chairman Sheila Burton and one member to steer the centre through the crisis.

When asked to comment on the situation, Mrs Burton said she did not wish to comment at the present time.

Staff originally found out they were owed holidays after head cook Gracie McIntyre was told by an accountant that she was legally entitled to four weeks holidays rather than two.
