Stranraer Harbour Breakwater Work to Begin
WORK is to start next week on a scheme to build a 90 metre long breakwater on the west side of Stranraer Harbour as part of a £1.3 million phase in the redevelopment of the waterfront area.
Dredging is planned to start as the next phase of the development project gets underway with the construction of the breakwater.
The contract is being funded by £350,000 each from Dumfries and Galloway Council and Scottish Enterprise Dumfries and Galloway and £600,000 from the European Regional Development Fund.
It will be carried out by R. J. MacLeod and should be completed by the Autumn.
The breakwater will provide a sheltered area of water on the western
side of the harbour where up to 50 pontoon berths will be created to meet the current demand
Construction will involve making a temporary causeway along the seaward side of the West Pier which will be used to transport sand and rock to form the breakwater at the end of the pier.
