Unemployment up, jobs down as credit crunch takes its toll

THE number of people claiming jobseekers allowance in Stranraer and Newton Stewart has jumped by 41 and 50 per cent respectively in the last year.

And worryingly the number of new jobs available in each area has fallen by 41 per cent in Stranraer and 39 per cent in Newton Stewart in the same time.

This is the equivalent of nine people going for each new job in Stranraer and six in Newton Stewart.
