CASTLE
GREEN to undergo
£35,000 development
CASTLE GREEN
in the centre of Stranraer is to undergo a £35,000 development
- the first stage of work that will lead to a new amphitheatre.
It has been
a long desire for many in the town for the unused area behind
the Halifax building to be developed.
Now, work is
to begin in consultation with Solway Heritage after funding
to the Small Towns Initiative was agreed.
The area in
question has brought complaints from the public both because
of its untidiness and as the site of unsociable behaviour.
And, although
no final plans have been agreed initial sketch ideas have
been drawn up.
A project will
be developed by the STI board alongside the council's community
resources and Solway Heritage to make sure that it does not
hinder future development.
Head of leisure
and sport at the council Stewart Atkinson told the 'Free Press'
this week "We see this very much as the first stage of the
development. "Our intention is to tidy up all the area in
question and provide an exhibition and performance space.
"We are very
much aware that the Castle Green is a focal point in the community.
What we intend to do is provide a flat platform area to allow
community groups and the council to have an area to plan more
events. In turn, it will also open up and improve that corner".
As much of
the £35,000 as possible will be used on work on the site with
hopes high that further money will be available in the future.
