Commando Memorial Presentation
| Today
(6 March 2000), Mr James Muirhead, from Portpatrick, presented
a framed photograph of The Commando Memorial at Spean
Bridge, near Fort William, (taken by Peter Muirhead, his
son) to the Portpatrick Primary School.
The memorial was modelled by Sergeant Jack Waddington
(front), 'Taffy' Mole (left) and Mr James Muirhead (right).
Only Mr. Muirhead survives - all were members of No 4
Commando. |

The
presentation was made at the School assembly, where the head
teacher, Mr Tyson, introduced Mr Muirhead and guests Lord
Lt. Major Orr-Ewing, Mr Brian Park and Mr Billy Mitchell.
The pupils sang songs for the visitors, who were all impressed
by their enthusiasm, good behaviour and smart appearance in
school uniforms.
The
Small Towns Initiative is to provide a supply of leaflets
concerning the monument and Mr Muirhead's involvement to the
School for use by pupils and visitors to the area.
