Stranraer Mcdonald's Our Town Story

Throughout the next year pupils from over 200 local authorities across Britain and Northern Ireland will be presenting shows in a specially constructed theatre in the Millennium Dome.

Dumfries and Galloway's representatives will be 80 pupils from nine Rhins primary schools and Stranraer Academy who will present their story on Tuesday 2 May 2000.

The theme will be Arrivals and Departures set against the Land, Sea and Air of the Rhins of Galloway. From the early hunter-gatherers on the shores of Luce Bay to the fast cross-channel ferries of today people have come and gone leaving their imprint on countryside and the communities. The performance will be a twenty minute encapsulation in short scenes with music and dance against a colourful projected backdrop of some of Scotland's most dramatic land and seascapes.

The participating schools are Drummore, Portpatrick, Lochans, Belmont, Park, St Joseph's, Castle Kennedy, Glenluce, Rephad and Stranraer Academy whose talented Roadshow will provide the music. A specially commissioned “Stranraer Y2K Reel” has been devised by Rosemary Henry with original music from Alastair Hunter, one of Scotland's leading accordionists, and will be performed by pupils from St Joseph's. An exhibition of 2 and 3 dimensional art will be on display outside the McDonald's Our Town Story Theatre on the day. The project is being backed by McDonald's, who are transporting the party to the Dome; Stranraer Small Towns Initiative and Stena Line. Dumfries and Galloway Council are participating in cash and kind through the Education and Community Resource Departments. The Exhibition will be on display in Stranraer Library in May and an extended version of the performance will be staged locally after the Dome visit.
