Stranraer could be Freight Centre

STRANRAER could become a major road-rail freight centre.

Railtrack are presently looking at the cost of making the single track line from Ayr to Stranraer suitable for carrying road trailers on specially adapted rail wagons.

And if they agree to fund the work which they find necessary, the way could be opened for a major rail development connecting Stranraer to the Continent as well as the rest of Britain.

There are hopes that Railtrack's report into what is necessary will be completed and available to interested parties some time this year.

Once the cost has been established - and a timetable for the work to be done worked out - efforts can then start to find customers.

One such already under consideration is mail/parcels traffic between Daventry in the English Midlands and Stranraer.

And freight carriers such as English Welsh Scottish Railways could look for similar work from other hauliers.
