Skilled Machinist Shortage

EXPANSION PLANS at Stranraer’s Grasshopper baby- wear factory are in doubt. For the company cannot recruit enough machinists to meet the demand.

And this week, Group Production Executive Glynn Llewellyn told the ‘Free Press’

"If we cannot recruit people we will have to look elsewhere".

Skilled machinists at the factory can earn up to £200 a week. But a training school which was established by Enterprise Scotland Dumfries and Galloway to provide people with basic machinist skills has produced just three people on the production line.

The company now urgently require an additional 15 machinists to meet the bulging order books. Said Mr Llewellyn

"We are very concerned at the factory. We are down to 50 machinists. We need at least another 15 just to cover the work."
