Hand-Grenade for Valentine's Day

VALENTINE'S DAY went with a real bang in New Luce this year after local youngster James Martin presented his mum with an unexploded hand-grenade.

The family who stay at "Dran Muir" in the village are now recovering from the shock of what was a potentially deadly incident.

Mum Carolann - who quickly raised the alarm - said

"Most people get chocolates or flowers for Valentine's Day, but I got a grenade!

"I am laughing about it now but it is quite frightening when you think what could have happened."

The drama unfolded at lunchtime when James (9) was out playing in his garden during the half-term school holiday.

He noticed a metal object about the size of a small pineapple wedged in the stone dyke surrounding the garden. Picking it out, he took it inside to give to his mum!

James, who is in Primary Five at Glenluce School, was playing soldiers dressed in his Commando gear when, amazingly, he found the real thing.

He told the "Free Press",

"I knew what it was because I have seen these sort of things in films."

Carolann Martin said

"I took the grenade back outside and contacted the police straight away. They arrived within ten minutes and were great." .
