Doggy Blood Transfusion for 'Kate'

SPRINGER SPANIEL Kate is well on the road to recovery from a rare illness - thanks to a doggy blood transfusion.

The young spaniel was suffering from a form of anaemia which led to a breakdown of her red blood cells.

And although Stranraer vet Walker Miller put her on a drug treatment, he feared it would not act in time.

So home he went to Leswalt, collected one of his wife's champion boxer dogs, took him to the practice in Academy Street, took off about half a litre of blood and dripped it into the spaniel.

He told the "Free Press" this week

"The following morning, the spaniel's red cell count was again very low but by then the drug had started to kick in."

"Without the transfusion, she would probably not have lasted the night".
