Leswalt
History Uncovered
HISTORY IS to be uncovered in Leswalt as a 2000-year-old fort,
which is unknown to almost all locals will be unmasked as
part of a two year clean-up in the wood.
The
fort at the Aldouran Glen wood has been hidden by rhododendrons
for as long as can be remembered. Now the Woodland Trust Scotland,
who own the wood, are to begin clearing the area as part of
a two year plan to clean up the wood.
As
the "Free Press" revealed earlier in the month, Scottish Power
have presented £20,000 for the restoration of the wood and
with a further £15,000 to be invested by the Woodland Trust
it is to undergo a massive maintenance job. South of Scotland
M.S.P. Alex Fergusson, who was brought up just a few miles
from the wood, visited the site on Friday along with two representatives
of the Woodland Trust to see the plans for himself.
As
Convener of the Parliament's Rural Development Committee Mr
Fergusson was delighted to see the award going towards the
restoration of the ancient wood.
"I
am pleased with the expert involvement from the Woodland
Trust.
"This is a very useful attraction for the area and offers
local people a pleasant walk. Its improvement can only be
beneficial for the area.
