SNAPSHOTS
of Lochryan's history
SNAPSHOTS
of Lochryan's history have been brought to life on a series
of display boards around the Loch.
The
boards show works by local artist Brian Arniell showing scenes
such as the 12th century castle at Innermessan, the former
military port at Cairnryan and the former seaplane base at
Kirkcolm.
The
Lochryan Advisory Management Forum are behind the idea and
the boards are located at the carpark to the north of Cairnryan,
Balyett, The Breastwork in Stranraer and The Wig, Kirkcolm.
They
also provide an insight into the rich and varied birdlife
associated
with the loch, from the common ducks and waders which frequent
the shores at Balyett, to the eider, scaup and grebes which
visit the loch in nationally important numbers during the
autumn and winter.
As
well as replacing some of the now faded Scottish Ornithologists'
Club boards found throughout West Galloway, the hope is that
the new boards will provide a catalyst for further projects
including footpaths and visitor centres.
