Research
in Stranraer Harbour
DEMAND
for a marina in Stranraer Harbour is to be probed by consultants.
Results
of a study commissioned by the Small Towns Initiative are
likely to be known early in the New Year.
And
at the same time, work is to be carried out at the West Pier
which could be used by a marina development including water
and electricity supplies.
In
conjunction with Scottish Enterprise Dumfries and Galloway,
the Sti are to commission a study into the desirability of
a small marina development.
Consultants
are now being sought who will carry out research into the
likely number of boats which will use such a facility both
local and tourers.
The
study will assess the potential of Stranraer being able to
reap the kind of benefits enjoyed by a number of harbour operations,
particularly in Northern Ireland.
This
week, Lord Stair, Sti chairman, stressed they were just at
the stage of a feasibility study which would examine opportunities
for development.
"If
the report identifies a potential we would need to discuss
any future work with all interested parties, especially
Dumfries and Galloway Council who own the harbour"
