Cancer
Treatment Study
A LOCAL STUDY is being carried out aimed at bringing cancer
treatment facilities to Wigtownshire.
And
it is hoped that it will bring an end to the torturous 100-mile-plus
journeys cancer patients face every time they need treatment.
Patients
in the district are being asked to help themselves and future
sufferers by taking part in Dr Gordon Baird’s study into the
possibility of decentralised facilities being made available.
At
present patients have to endure regular trips to Dumfries,
Glasgow or Edinburgh for the type of treatment Dr Baird of
Sandhead wants to see available on a mobile basis such as
chemotherapy, CT scanning and ultra-sound.
And
he is asking sufferers in Wigtownshire to get in contact with
his practice at Sandhead to help provide evidence to a study
which will be submitted to the health authorities at the Scottish
Executive.
"We
need patients to contact us in full confidence that their
details will not be submitted to any third party", said
Dr Baird.
"It
is vital that we get as many cases as possible, if we only
get results from half the patients then we will only get
half the resources", he said.
