local man Arthur Hastie fulfilled a life-time's ambition last
week when he went up, up and away for a bird's-eye view of
his home territory.
was all part of a surprise birthday treat for Arthur (66)
which had been carefully planned by friends at his local.
at the Tigh-na-Mara Hotel in Stoneykirk had saved up enough
cash over the past few weeks to pay for a trip in a light
aircraft based at West Freugh airfield.
they say, the hardest part was getting Arthur to the hotel
on time without him expecting anything!
make it on time he did and he arrived at the bar to find it
packed with his friends who had given up their day to ensure
he had an unforgettable birthday surprise.
a short speech prior to take-off, Arthur was told he would
have to swap his boilersuit for a flying-suit.
it was only when Len Kavanagh, who is manager of Serco Operations
at West Freugh, told Arthur he was going up in a flight at
1 p.m. that the surprise finally did sunk in.
