Bowler
to Carry Commonwealth Baton
BOWLER
Kathleen Stevenson has been chosen to carry the Commonwealth
baton on part of its journey to Manchester to the Commonwealth
Games.
And
she hopes to see it there if she is picked for the Scottish
bowling team.
The
baton will arrive at Stranraer from Northern Ireland by Stena
Line ferry on Saturday, 8th June.
It
will then be carried in stages by a succession of 5000 runners
in 50 days to the North-West of England in time for the official
opening of the games.
Kathleen,
who lives at "Braemar", Carlton Terrace, Stranraer,
discovered she had been chosen as one of the 5000 when she
opened a letter giving her the details.
Her
part in the ceremony will take her 500 yards through part
of Cairnryan.
She
is in the nine-strong Scottish women's bowling squad from
which the final seven will be chosen.
So
she is keeping her fingers crossed that being asked to carry
the baton is a lucky omen and that her name will be on the
list when it is finalised.
