Supermarkets
in England to Sell Stranraer Cheese
CHEESE
from The Caledonian Creamery in Stranraer will soon be on
sale at 125 Netto discount supermarkets in England.
Glasgow-based
cheese producer A. McLelland and Son have won a £6 million
contract to supply 200 tonnes of own-brand cheddar a month
to the company under the Netto- brand name of Elmsall Farm
Mild and Elmsall Farm Mature Cheddar.
Produced
in Stranraer, the order will help to secure the 100 existing
jobs as well as increase demand for milk from dairy farmers
in the South-West.
A.
McLelland and Son currently supply many brand cheddars to
Netto, including their Seriously Strong, the most popular
brand cheddar in the country, which is also produced in Stranraer.
The
company, who have seen their turn-over grow from £28
million in 1995, to£120 million this year, describe
the own-brand deal as a major coup.
Alastair
Irvine joint managing director, said
"This
is a significant win for the company and represents a major
opportunity for us".
