Major Step Forward For Sports Complex

AMBITIONS for a multi-million pounds sports complex in Stranraer have taken a major step forward.

Edinburgh consultants Gaia Planning will this week begin a four-month feasibility study into the prospect of a state-of-the-art facility serving a wide range of sports for all age groups in the Belmont and Ochtrelure area of Stranraer.

And local residents of Belmont and Ochtrelure are being urged to take part in the study by giving their views on the "highly ambitious" venture.

The "Free Press" reported in October how the Galloway Community Sports Trust had acquired two £5000 grants from Wigtown West Area committee and the Small Towns Initiative.

The Trust hope to secure money for a floodlit football park with 300-seat covered enclosure for the use of Stranraer Athletic Football Club;

  • a six-lane indoor bowling facility;
  • a community hall with meeting and function rooms;
  • changing facilities;
  • fitness suit;
  • training facilities;
  • restaurant and car parking.

And Belmont Primary, which occupies the land immediately next door to the proposed facility, are also to benefit in the shape of two full-size, all-weather football pitches.

The total cost of the project is estimated at £3.2 million.
