Royal Air Force Champion Piper of 2001

STRANRAER MAN Sergeant Sandy Dalziel is now the Royal Air Force Champion Piper of 2001.

Sandy, who has been in the RAF for 18 years and is presently stationed at Kinloss, travelled to RAF Halton to take part in the piping competition.

Judge was Pipe-Major Samson of The Highlanders, who is also the Senior Pipe-Major of the Army and he gave Sandy the premier award on his aggregate score for his playing of pibroch, march, strathspey and reel.

The tunes Sandy played were "The Lament for the Old Sword", "Pipe-Major John Stewart", "Caber Feidh" and "John Morrison of Assynt House".

As a youngster Sandy was a member of Lochryan Pipe Band and, until he joined the RAF, played in many competitions with the band and also took part in solo events with much success.

Sandy was presented with a rose bowl and a skean dbhu to mark his achievement by the Station Commander of RAF Halton.
