Cheese Store for Stranraer
ANOTHER
multi-million pound development is planned by the Caledonian
Cheese Company in Stranraer.
A
massive cheese store nearly 120 metres long and 40 metres
wide and capable of storing 10,000 tonnes of cheese will mean
at least five more jobs at the home of Seriously Strong cheese.
With
two major projects announced and one a cheese packing plant
to come, around 60 new jobs will boost the area's employment
prospects.
Planners
meeting in Newton Stewart were recommended to approve the
cheese store project. If the go-ahead is given, the plan is
to have the store in operation by the start of next year.
Because
the former Galloway Creamery has storage for only 6000 tonnes
of cheese, Caledonian Cheese have to mature major stocks elsewhere
at present mostly in the Midlands of England. The new store
in Stranraer would allow them to retain the vast majority
of their output locally. This will be a vital consideration
when A. McLelland and Sons Ltd build a state-of-the-art cheese
packing plant on vacant land and an existing factory site
on the other side of Commerce Road from the creamery.
