A75 Upgrade Delay

WORK on upgrading the A75 Euro Route will not begin until 2005 at the earliest - two years later than first mooted.

A £30 million improvement programme involving six schemes has been well publicised over the last four years and work on two of those was due to start last year.

But the latest action plan from the Scottish Executive lays out proposals for five of those six schemes to begin "beyond 2005".

The delay has met with condemnation from local campaigners and politicians alike.

The overtaking lane at Barlae, near Glenluce, on which work was due to begin last spring is one which has been put back to "beyond 2005".

Executive officials have blamed "ground problems" for the setback on that specific project. Now the plans will have to be redrafted and go back through the lengthy consultation process.

Stranraer councillor Robert Higgins, chairman of the North Channel Partnership which has campaigned for investment in both the A75 and A77, slammed the delays as "a scandal". He said:

"We are continually given dates which build up the hopes of the local community and the road users but, to date, nothing has happened at our end of the A75 or A77 - it's nothing short of a scandal.

"We will keep up the pressure until we see some sort of result. But the only time we will get a result is when we see the roads under construction."
