Boy Racer Crackdown
BOY racers in Stranraer town centre are being targeted
for action by
police.
Last week they struck with six men being reported
for a total of 26
offences.
And Inspector Ian Cowie, who heads police in the area has
promised more of
the same.
It was on Tuesday night that police targeted areas
around Stranraer town
centre and seafront.
Offences being reported include careless
driving, causing excessive engine
noise and having no insurance. One driver was even allegedly
seen typing a
text message on his mobile phone while driving.
This week Inspector Cowie, told the Free Press:
"We
will continue to
respond to community complaints on anti-social driver
behaviour that not
only causes noise nuisance, but is often dangerous.
"It is
disappointing that the lessons of a similar campaign
last year have
not been learned by some, but I would warn them to stop
now before they find
themselves liable to substantial fines and perhaps eventual
disqualification
from driving".
He added:
"Convictions for certain
driving offences may also greatly
increase insurance premiums".
And the Inspector warned:
"Soon to be introduced Anti-Social
Behaviour legislation will give the
police further powers to seize and seek forfeiture
of vehicles driven by
habitual offenders".
Police will focus on this issue
over coming weeks to cut the potential for
road crashes and promote more responsible driver behaviour.
