Bomb Scare Closes Courthouse, Twice

FOR THE second time in a week, a bomb scare closed Stranraer Sheriff Courthouse in Lewis Street.

Now, letterboxes for mail for the Procurator Fiscal and the Sheriff Clerk have been sealed.

Police were stationed outside the building on Monday after court proceedings came to an abrupt end in mid-morning.

What was described as "a threatening letter" had been received although neither police nor court officials would say what the threat was.

A search of the building, which was closed for around five hours, was made, using sniffer dogs. Then on Friday, court staff left the building after another letter was received. Again there was no confirmation of its contents although the Free Press understand that a dog trained to sniff out explosives was taken through the building together with trained police search advisers.

The letter was later sent to a forensic science laboratory in Glasgow for examination. Results are still pending.
