Cheese Workers Advised to Accept Settlement

UNIONS at Stranraer's Caledonian Cheese Company have recommended that workers accept the company's offer of a pay settlement.

Both sides of the dispute have stressed they are keen to see an end to the wage row which has gone on now for around a year.

Staff at the giant factory in the town's Commerce Road were balloted yesterday (Wednesday) on an offer made by the company this week. The vote result is expected at the end of the week.

The 74 members of the Transport and General Workers' Union who make up the bulk of the production staff at the factory are to be polled. T&GWU negotiator Mick Higgins said:

"The company responded to us formally on Tuesday with a revised pay offer. We balloted our members with the recommendation that they accept it - now it is up to them."

He added that he was not prepared to go into the terms of the deal being offered until the vote was complete. Mr Higgins added that relations between the two sides were "positive" and the talks were progressing well.
