Car Yard Development Warning

A SENIOR cheese company executive has warned that their future investment in Stranraer could be jeopardised if a planned car breaking yard gets the go-ahead.

Joe Cairns, finance director of cheese giants McLelland, who own the Caledonian Cheese Company, gave the warning at a meeting of Wigtown Area Regulatory Committee in Wigtown last Wednesday.

He travelled from Glasgow to speak as councillors heard an application from local car company DA Autoparts to build a car breaking yard. The development is planned at a site next to the Caledonian Cheese Company's new £15m packing and storage centre at Stranraer's Blackparks Industrial Estate.

DA are applying for a change of use at the former Scottish power depot to develop a vehicle breaking site with associated racking facilities.

Council planners have already recommended the development be granted subject to a number of conditions.

At last week's meeting, however, councillors decided to defer their decision in order to make a site visit to inspect the planned development.
