Flooding Prevention for Portpatrick

FLOODING could soon be a thing of the past in Portpatrick.

For the village, which has been hit by severe flooding in recent years, could see a start to a scheme later this month to prevent a repetition. And the scheduled completion date is July.

Work has been going on for the past three years to design the scheme. This week the final part of the jigsaw was put in place when councillors agreed to fund the remaining £225,000 of the £900,000 cost of the scheme.

A report to the Corporate Policy Committee which met in Dumfries on Tuesday spelled out the position. The Scottish Executive, committee members were told, had indicated that extra money could be available this year together with a 50 per cent grant for this and next year.

Pre-tender cost total £900,000 of which £130,000 has already been spent on design, specialist consultants and legal requirements.

Of the remaining £770,000, £545,000 could come from the Scottish Executive, leaving a shortfall of £225,000.
