A New Lease of Life

AN ELDERLY couple from Portpatrick are relishing a new lease of life after a remarkable week in which they both came through life-saving surgery.

Donald MacDonald and his wife Eileen reckon they have been the beneficiaries of a "modern day miracle".

For only days after Donald went under the knife in a crucial heart bypass operation this month, Eileen received the news she had been waiting five years for - that she was to undergo a kidney transplant.

Eileen is now recovering in Glasgow's Western Infirmary after the successful operation brought to an end five years of painstaking home dialysis.

And the joy does not end there - for the couple's youngest daughter Sheila, who lives in Canada, also received good news from doctors this month after a short battle with cancer.

Speaking to the Free Press as he recovered in the Garrick Hospital, Mr MacDonald (71) smiled:

"This has been a truly fantastic year for my family - I hope whoever has been smiling down on us keeps doing so."
