Stranraer Street Wardens

A sum of £400,000 has been granted to COMMUNITY wardens will soon patrol Stranraer's streets after the council secured funding for the project.cover the 2004/2005 period. Further funding is expected to follow for 2005/2006.

The council now propose a series of meetings to inform the public of plans. A council spokesman said:

"The first steps to secure funds were taken last year and the money will help get two pilot projects off the ground."

These are in the Dick's Hill and Belmont areas of Stranraer and in North West Dumfries. The Council's Wigtown area Community Planning Co-ordinator, Marion Kay, said:

"The wardens will be a valuable resource to the community, acting as a link between council departments, the local housing partnership, the police, fire services and others.

"Residents and wardens will work together to find solutions to local problems."

She added that wardens will be recruited over the next few weeks with an extensive training programme already in place to prepare new wardens for starting work on 1st May.
