Primary Totem Poles!
WOOD you believe it? Two local primary schools are to
get their own totem
poles carved from trees following a visit by First Nation
carvers from
Canada later this month.
Park Primary in Stranraer, and
Portpatrick Primary will each be visited by
the carvers from British Columbia for a week from the
27th March.
Kenny Grieve, a Fife-based woodcarver, will
visit the schools along with the
Canadian group which will include Xwa Lack Tun, from
the Squamish First
Nation, and they will assist the pupils with the carving
of the Totem Poles.
Storytellers will lend a hand to
provide some good ideas for the carvings
and, when completed, the poles will depict stories
from the history of the
local area.
Pupils at the schools have already been researching
local history and
legends and will use these when they are putting
their creative skills to
the test.
After the carving of the 21ft logs is complete,
both schools will display
them for all to see, putting a rather unusual
new landmark on the horizon at
each of the locations.
